Lions International

The International Association of Lions Clubs began in 1917 as a dream of Chicago businessman, Melvin Jones. He believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons from purely professional concerns to the betterment of their communities and the world at large.

Today, more than 1.35 million lion’s members in over 45,000 clubs in 206 countries and geographical areas work to advance Melvin Jones dream helping people in their communities, in the areas that they live, in their country and around the world.

In 1925 Helen Keller challenged Lions to be the knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness. Lions accepted the challenge and have been working to help sight challenged individuals ever since.

Lions Global Causes

While each Lions club has its own service focus, there are five global causes of particular interest around the world. These are areas of need identified, and voted on, by members and supported by our association and foundation.

VISION - Ever since Helen Keller inspired us to champion the cause in 1925, we’ve served and advocated for the blind and visually impaired. Nearly a century later, this long-standing mission continues unhindered.

DIABETES - We serve to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve quality of life for those diagnosed.

ENVIRONMENT - We serve to sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities.

CHILDHOOD CANCER - Lions and Leos provide support for the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer through impactful service activities.

HUNGER - We serve to ensure all community members have access to nutritious foods.
